Legendary product designer Dieter Rams identifies “good design” as being innovative, useful, aesthetic, understandable, unobtrusive, honest, long-lasting, thorough, sustainable and minimal. The award-winning designs featured in this annual juried exhibition are extraordinary examples of these ten principles. With this in mind, this catalog integrates these words into the cover art, while also pointing to Utah as a place where good design happens. The mass of arrows that populate the cover represent this; while also signifying the many options, iterations and directions that occur throughout the design process as the arrows move towards a single idea/solution. As the reader opens the catalog, this message is simply stated: “good design is here”. The following page features the juror’s statement about good design and identifies the projects created by the ten award winners featured in the catalog. The catalog begins with two spreads dedicated to each of the designers that were selected for the juror’s choice award. Each spread utilizes similar type treatments, yet each have a unique page layout that best represents photographs of the various projects. This layout approach carries throughout the entire catalog.
